ISLAMIC TOURISM CENTRE EXPLORES NEW MARKET OPPORTUNITIES AT HALAL EXPO LONDON

PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA, 30 NOVEMBER 2022: Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) has been invited to speak at the inaugural Halal Expo London to share Malaysia’s experience and journey as an Islamic Tourism destination and its Muslim-Friendly tourism branding.  Scheduled for 2-3 December at the world-famous ExCel London, the event is anticipated to welcome global professionals and exhibitors interested in the trillion-dollar global Muslim market.

Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip Hasan, Director General of ITC, will take the stage at the concurrent Halal Economy Conference on 3 December to share insights into the Muslim tourist market. He will address delegates of the expo on the topic “Clouds Above the Rest: Islamic Tourism Inspires Balance, Transformations and Solutions.” The presentation will focus on Malaysia’s positioning and recognition as the most-preferred Muslim-Friendly tourist destination, as reported by MasterCard-CrescentRating in its Global Muslim Travel Index for seven consecutive years and DinarStandard’s State of the Global Islamic Economy report.

Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip said: “We are happy to support and be part of this inaugural event together with our partners, Malaysia Airlines and Tourism Malaysia. It’s an opportunity for us to connect with potential partners, explore opportunities with others, and introduce what Malaysia has to offer to the Muslim market. It’s a great opportunity to reach out to Muslim tourists from new markets such as the UK and the rest of Europe. Malaysia is a culturally-diverse destination with plenty of Halal food for Muslim tourists to experience with ease and comfort.”

Malaysia has long been a preferred destination among Muslim tourists and this is a reflection of the country’s positioning as a destination with all the tourism products and services in place to welcome this market. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, through ITC, has played a key role in mobilising and motivating tourism industry players to invigorate Islamic Tourism.

Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip noted: “The increasing number of global exhibitions held to tap into the Muslim market is a healthy indication of the rising awareness for this consumer group. As we emerge from the pandemic and other socioeconomic and geopolitical challenges, Islamic Tourism serves as a potential way forward that is inclusive of all economic sectors and the wider global community.”

He added: “Through training and capacity building, research, outreach, standards development, and branding, ITC wishes to inspire governments, destination management organisations, and the global tourism community to see Islamic Tourism beyond just profitable growth. It’s a space to nurture humanistic values, sustainability and resilience, and collaborations.”

ITC will be taking a booth at the expo to promote its consultancy, research and training, and standards and industry development services to destinations and tourism industry players interested to tap into the Muslim tourist market by enhancing their product and service offerings.

Delegates of the expo are invited to meet with ITC representatives at Booth C34 of the Halal Expo London at ExCeL London to discuss potential collaborations in the Islamic Tourism space.

ITC’s presence at Halal Expo London is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and Tourism Malaysia.

Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) is an entity under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Malaysia tasked to develop the Islamic tourism segment for Malaysia. It advocates for Muslim-friendly tourism (MFT) by offering research and market intelligence, training, industry development and consultation, Muslim-friendly tourism and hospitality (MFTH) service standards and certification, and information exchange.

In 2021, ITC received two key awards, i.e. Strategic Business Alliance Award at The BrandLaureate World Halal Best Brand E-Branding Awards 2021, and Best Islamic Tourism Leadership Gold Award 2021 by Malaysia Tourism Council. These are recognition of ITC’s efforts and endeavours in formulating new strategies to meet the new normal of the business environment to ensure business continuity and sustainability, notwithstanding its role to develop and grow the Islamic tourism segment in Malaysia.

In 2022, Malaysia was again named top country in the world in the MFT sector by the State of the Global Islamic Economy (SGIE) Report 2022 by DinarStandard in partnership with Salaam Standard and supported by Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism.

Malaysia also retained the top-ranked destination in the MasterCard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2022, a position it has defended since the launch of the Index in 2015.

These recognitions are an added motivation for ITC to continue to strengthen its efforts in being a prime mover and leading institution to ensure Malaysia is at the forefront of MFTH.
