EXPLORING MALAYSIA’S ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE: MOSQUE OPEN DAY INVITES VISITORS TO IMMERSE IN CULTURAL SPLENDOUR

PUTRAJAYA, 6 SEPTEMBER 2023: In a celebration of Malaysia’s rich architectural tapestry throughout the recently-launched Islamic Tourism Month 2023 (ITM 2023), a captivating event is set to unfold – the Mosque Open Day.

This event invites visitors, Muslims and non-Muslims to delve into the enchanting world of Malaysian mosque architecture, offering a glimpse into the fusion of heritage and artistry that shapes the nation’s spiritual landmarks.

Began on 30 August with Masjid Tengku Tengah Zaharah in Malaysia’s east coast state, Terengganu, the Mosque Open Day will be hosted in series and open the doors to several of Malaysia’s most iconic mosques in different locations nationwide, allowing visitors and attendees to appreciate the intricate designs, cultural symbolism, and historical significance that these structures hold.

Following Masjid Tengku Tengah Zaharah, other selected prominent mosques listed are Masjid Bandaraya Kuching in Sarawak (8 September), Masjid Panglima Kinta in Perak, Masjid Sultan Iskandar Bandar Dato’ Onn, Johor and Masjid Tengku Mahkota Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Taman Temerloh Jaya, Pahang (9 September), Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Selangor (10 September), Masjid Paloh, Perak and finally, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad in Kuala Lumpur (16 September).

Amidst Malaysia’s diverse cultural backdrop, these mosques stand tall as captivating embodiments of creativity, faith, and unity. With a legacy dating back centuries, these mosques reflect the nation’s multicultural identity and its harmonious blend of architectural styles.

People from all different walks of life, Muslim and non-Muslim visitors can look forward to several other supported activities, among others are guided tours, cultural showcases and local artistry demonstrations (including wedding ritual, muslim and chinese calligraphy competition and Adhan performance) that will unravel the stories behind stunning architecture that span different regions of Malaysia, providing insights into the cultural significance and historical context that shaped their creation.

Held from 21 August till 17 September 2023, ITM 2023 is a month-long showcase of events, activities, and tourism offerings for the public, tourists, tourism industry players, and entrepreneurs alike that presents itself as a gallery of the rich and unique Islamic tourism experiences Malaysia has to offer.

Officially launched by the Menteri Besar of Perak, YAB Dato’ Seri Haji Saarani Mohamad, ITM 2023 which hosted by the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) — an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) is dedicated to showcasing the nation’s remarkable Muslim-friendly tourism offerings by the travel industry.

MOTAC’s aim is to highlight Malaysia’s diverse array of Muslim-friendly products and services, foster collaboration among industry stakeholders, and solidify strategic partnerships among the Islamic Tourism ecosystem players through the Islamic Tourism Month.

On top of special promotions on accommodations, travel packages, spa and wellness experiences, food and beverages, shopping and retail offers, as well as events, seminars and exhibitions, this year’s ITM2023 is also enhanced by the use of QR technology to provide the public with easy and instant access to the exclusive offers by ITM partners during the entire month.

There is also a TikTok Challenge that the public can participate to win special prizes sponsored by various industry partners. Among the top prizes are 30 prepaid cards pre-loaded with RM1,000 each by Mastercard.

These recognitions are an added motivation for ITC to continue to strengthen its efforts in being a prime mover and leading institution to ensure Malaysia is at the forefront of MFTH.
